Bike (ph)ix
2012
Bicycle Theft is a huge problem in the city of Philadelphia. When I began to notice all the stripped bikes locked up and abandoned around center city, I wondered what would happen if I filled in the missing parts, to change the feeling from sad and broken to funny and fixed. An avid bike rider myself, it is not a good feeling to lock a bike up to a rack with a stripped bike already there.Although the Bike (Ph)ix project was temporary and I used non-functional parts to “fix” the bikes, my hope was that with my willingness to engage with these bikes would create an alternative way of thinking about one small issue of theft. In a city that loves bikes, I was, and continue to suggest that we as a society fix them together.
